WhaleAid Aleppo Fundraiser - Please Support our Secretary Mike Bodger

A group of swimmers in Whakatane, including myself, are fund-raising for the children of Aleppo, Syria. The destruction of Aleppo and its people has continued un-abated for the last four and half years. The funds will be administered through Relief Aid Our fund-raising activity is a sponsored swim from Whale Island (Moutohorā) to Whakatane, an openwater swim of 10km. Other people and activities have now joined in to fund-raising. The swim is scheduled for Sunday, March 18th 2017 and I have the responsibility of preparing a group of swimmers for this major swim. Since living in Whakatane I have completed the swim twice when it was a race prior to 2010. The swimmers will be accompanied by helpers and guides in the form of boats and kayaks. As one of the swimmer’s I am seeking sponsorship from other swimmers of $1 per kilometre. I am also organising two further fund-raising ventures: a movie evening of the film “Captain Webb” (2015). (Matthew Webb, an Englishman, was the first person to swim the English Channel in 1875) and a “Chocolate Fish” swim meeting in Whakatane in 2017 with swims from 25m to 200m where I hope to encourage first time racers to participate. I would be very grateful for your support.

Swim Workouts for Different Days

Bored with you swim workout?  Below are some examples of Main Set workouts for different days
of the week.

Always remember to include a warm up, drill work and a cool down in your workout.

Speed Day:

3 x (100m swim HARD, 50m easy)

10 x 100m at lactate threshold effort

2 x (5 x 100m FAST at descending effort, 100m easy)

Distance Day:

4 x 300m at moderate effort with :20 rest

6 x 200m

Odds: Max distance per stroke with focus on good technique

Evens: Moderate effort for 4 x 400m

Technique/Strength Day :

4 x (100m pull, 50m one-arm drill, 250m pull)

3 x (4 x 50m band training with :10 rest, 300m pull with :15 rest, 50m easy) at moderate effort

2 x (4 x 100m with :15 rest, breathing every 3/4/5/6 by 25m)
