Christmas Message from the President

Dear Swimmers

It’s been a great year to be involved in Masters Swimming.

Membership has continued to grow and the trend for increased entries at the sanctioned meets also continues.

It’s been heartening to see the resurgence of existing clubs and interest from new members.

Despite the relatively short notice, Taupo hosted a flawless North Island Short Course Championships. The location was perfect for a family weekend and the meet itself ran like a well-oiled machine. They showed us how to organise a carnival that was of a very high technical standard while still being friendly and fun.

In the South Island, the Ashburton club continue to do great work. Once again, they hosted the South Island Short Course Championships and they have added some open water events to their calendar.

In the pool, the year culminated with an outstanding National Championship at the Sir Owen Glenn pool in Albany. The venue was superb and produced swimming to match – in all, nearly 60 records were broken. Our National Recorder, Jan O’Donnell has been kept busy.

Our thanks and congratulations to the North Shore club for hosting such a premium event.

Also it was great to see the interest and involvement from Swimming NZ.

With World Masters Games being held in Auckland, 2017 will be a big year for Masters Swimming. Good luck to our many members that have entered and are training hard towards this meet. Let’s continue the momentum beyond WMG and keep on growing the membership.

And a big thank you to all of our members for continuing to support Masters Swimming in NZ.

Thanks to all of you that have helpfully provided feedback during the year – keep it coming, it all helps.

From the NZMS executive, we wish you and your families a very merry and safe Christmas.

John Fisher NZMS President

SwimTrek: Dalmatian Coast, Croatia - Dawn Walker

After hearing lots of positive and exciting feedback about SwimTrek holidays (from Rebecca, Mike and other friends…) we decided that it would too good an opportunity to miss: combining a trip to the UK with a few cheeky ocean swims in Europe beforehand.

Looking at the options, we narrowed it down to Greece, Turkey and Croatia and picked the Dalmatian Coast for our final choice as it was a place none of us had ever visited before. We decided on the 4km a day swim option as this allowed us time to explore on land too.

Six of us headed off from NZ in July this year: Deryn McGregor (her husband ,Craig, was a non
swimmer participant), Kim and David Parker (open water competitors in NZ), Giles Walker, and myself. We organised ourselves to get to the beautiful island of Prvic Luka for the Swim Trek briefing. This island was to be our home for the week. A stunning setting, no motorised vehicles, no road network, history galore and an abundance of ocean!

The week consisted of daily swims (sometimes one longer one,
other days two shorter swims). Each day the Swim Trek boat and skipper would arrive, and along with our two SwimTrek instructors we would head to a different location, all within the Dalmatian Coast area. There was a variety of swims: circumnavigating islands, crossings between islands, bay to bay etc. Each swim was well set up, health and safety was paramount, groups swam with similar ability swimmers and had a boat alongside. All in all there were 15 swimmers from around the globe sharing a similar love of swimming in the ocean.

Outside of the swimming there were opportunities to explore the history of the area, with the instructors advising and organising trips to see significant historical sites. Evenings were spent dining in local restaurants and sharing stories with each other. We were particularly impressed with how our non swimmer, Craig, was welcomed and included. He was allowed to come out on the boat each day, if he wished, and be involved with ‘bombs’ off the boat, if he wished!

Croatia is a beautiful country and many of the swimmers spent time before and after visiting the major cities such as Dubrovnik and Zagreb. The sea was predominantly calm and clear and water
temperatures were perfect, around the low 20s. With daily temperatures in the mid 30s, this was refreshing!

If you love open water swimming, hanging out with new and old friends and want to combine a holiday with your favourite sport (without the pressure of Scott Rice’s hooter and a mad rush for the first buoy!) then a SwimTrek holiday is a must do. We are already eyeing up our next one...too many to choose from but the Galapagos Islands sounds like one worth saving up for.

Records Fall at the 2016 NZMS Long Course Champs

It was a very successful event with a massive 60 records smashed!

Congratulations to all record breakers and a big thank you to North Shore Masters for running a brilliant and well organized Swim Meet!

Please note that these results are still provisional!

Certificate of Achievement - Jo Matthews

Certificates of Achievement are presented to those swimmers who, while not being awarded the Swimmer of the Year trophy, have demonstrated outstanding performances throughout the year at national and/or international level. The ‘Certificate of Achievement’ recipients are chosen by the Executive with the assistance of the National Recorder.

The only recipient for 2015 was Jo Matthews, pictured here after being awarded her certificate at the NISCC in Taupo.

Jo was recognised for breaking 8 NZ records at 5 meets. She was New Zealand’s sole representative at the FINA World Masters in Kazan, Russia.

Jo broke short course records in 50, 100 and 200m Fly and 200m IM, and long course records in 100 and 200m Fly.

Some of the records had stood since 2007 and she reduced the 100m Fly short course record by over six seconds in one swim.

Our congratulations and thanks to Jo.

Recipe of the Month - High Protein Low Carb Mexican Stuffed Peppers

Ingredients

For the Seasoning

1 1/2 teaspoons cumin seeds
1 1/2 teaspoons paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons granulated garlic
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground saffron
1/2–1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper, optional

For the Peppers
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup chopped yellow onion
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 jalapeƱo or serrano
chili pepper, seeded
and chopped
2 pounds lean (90/10) ground chicken
or turkey
1 (14.5-ounce) can no-salt-added,
fire-roasted diced tomatoes, with juices
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro, divided
4 medium bell peppers
Lime wedges

Directions
Prepare seasoning. In a small dry skillet on medium-low, toast cumin seeds for 1–2 minutes, until fragrant, shaking skillet occasionally. Remove from heat; cool 2 minutes. Transfer seeds to a spice grinder; grind to a powder. Transfer cumin to a small bowl, and stir in remaining seasoning ingredients.

Heat oil in a large skillet. Add onion, garlic and chili pepper; cook 2 minutes while stirring. Add chicken; cook until no longer pink. Sprinkle with seasoning mixture; stir well. Stir in tomatoes, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, then simmer, uncovered, 5–7 minutes or until most of the liquid has evaporated. Stir in 1/4 cup cilantro.

Meanwhile, cut
bell peppers in half vertically (from stems to bottoms). Remove and discard stems, seeds and membranes. In a large pot, blanch peppers in boiling water, 2–3 minutes or just until tender; drain. Fill peppers with chicken mixture.

For each serving, arrange 2 pepper halves on a plate. Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup cilantro, and serve with lime wedges.
