Meet the NZMS President - John Fisher

I’m 52 and married to Helen.  We are lucky enough to have 3 boys - George (17), Eddie (15) and Henry (7).

I was born in England and emigrated to NZ in 1987 which was the best decision I ever made.

I work as an independent IT consultant in Auckland.  I live on a 10 acre “lifestyle” block with a donkey and 4 cows.  All of which makes for a very busy life.

I have been a swimmer most of my life (since I learnt in Singapore when I was 4 years old).  I swam competitively in England when I was growing up but gave it up for about 7 years during university and the first years of work. When I came to NZ I swam at Auckland’s Tepid baths where I met Barry Young who invited me to train at lunchtime with his group of friends.  He recommended that I join Masters and I’ve been an active member ever since.

I swim for Waitakere and I am currently the vice-president of that club.

I try to get to as many swim meets as work and family time allows.  I enjoy travelling around NZ and meeting other swimmers of all ages.

I’m very pleased to be able to continue to work with Mike Bodger and look forward to working with our new vice-president, Warren Gilbertson.  I’m a great believer in the benefits of Masters Swimming and hope we can contribute to keeping it a vibrant and inclusive community.
